Philippe, which wandered the Atlantic Ocean for nearly two weeks, is no longer a tropical storm but something potentially more menacing.
Sweeping by Bermuda, it has transitioned into a “post-tropical cyclone” according to the National Hurricane Center, or the equivalent of a strong nor’easter.
Philippe lived a confusing life as a disorganized but long-lived and unpredictable tropical storm before becoming a nor’easter, progressing substantially farther west than forecast. Early this week, it came close enough to the northern Leeward Islands to bring flooding rains, and it also brushed the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.On Friday morning, Philippe was 110 miles south of Bermuda and was barreling to the north-northeast at 20 mph.
While specific details remain uncertain, it is likely that a combination of strong gusty winds, heavy rain and rough surf along the coast will disrupt weekend plans, especially from eastern Massachusetts northward through Maine, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Regarding rain totals, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts may just see showery weather on Saturday as a “dry slot” of air wraps into Philippe’s transforming circulation on the back side.
Overall, impacts from Philippe may be similar to Lee’s in mid-September, but winds probably will be less intense - meaning lesser impacts at the coast.
