In the August interview, Merriman called the contracts a “breakthrough” in the county’s efforts to secure more bedspace. Unlike with other contracts, The Centers will not be able to reject or eject any child referred, something Merriman said has hindered the county in securing safe housing in the past, especially for teens with pending charges, behavioral issues or other highly specialized needs who are hardest to place and often get cycled through multiple placements.
As with the pay raises, one question the county will need to answer is how it plans to sustain the funding beyond July 2024, when the contracts expire. Merriman said immediate funding will come from the county’s general fund, including HHS levy dollars and about $5 million into address the shortage of residential placements.
