Despite attempts to roll back some of the hardline restrictions of the Trump administration, Magnus has overseen a continuation of strict border security measures.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Chris Magnus speaks during an interview in his office with The Associated Press, Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022, in Washington."President Biden appreciates Commissioner Magnus' nearly forty years of service and the contributions he made to police reform during his tenure as police chief in three U.S. cities. The President thanks Mr. Magnus for his service at CBP and wishes him well," the statement read.
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, in a letter to the CBP workforce, announced that Magnus resigned. He said he's "thankful" for the contributions made by Magnus. Deputy Commissioner Troy Miller will serve in the interim. The resignation comes amid reports of confusion, leadership turmoil and a shutdown of communication boiling over at the Department of Homeland Security on Friday and that the head of U.S. customs and immigration security had refused to resign his post.
Magnus refused a request this week from Mayorkas that he resign from his leadership position at the agency,Magnus was confirmed by the Senate less than a year ago following a contentious partisan confirmation hearing where Republicans attempted to tie him to what they have long called President Joe Biden's "open border" policies.
However, despite attempts to roll back some of the hardline restrictions of the Trump administration, which were historically severe, Magnus has overseen a continuation of strict border security measures.if they are found entering the U.S. without authorization. The protocols are in line with the agency's continued use of Title 42, a decades-old public health law first used to expel migrants at the start of the global pandemic.
