The City University of New York says it is investigating allegations that the law school’s Human Rights and Gender Justice Clinic partnered recently with a Palestinian advocacy group that has possible ties to a terrorist organization
.
In January, the CUNY School of Law's Human Rights and Gender Justice Clinic and the Defense for Children International — Palestine submitted a 57-pageto the UN Commission of Inquiry, established during a special session of the UN Human Rights Council in May to look into 2018 protests in the "Occupied Palestinian Territory".
"DCI-P is deeply linked to a U.S.-designated terrorist organization and as such really is deeply disqualified from making any contributions to analysis of human rights and of armed conflict,” said Yona Schiffmiller, NGO Monitor's director of North America desk. Mary Lu Bilek, dean of the CUNY School of Law, told POLITICO that the clinic in question is one of 12 that operates through the university's Main Street Legal Services program and that its work “is within the bounds of the law, the rules of legal ethics, and the norms of clinical legal education.”“The Clinic did that work with Defense for Children International-Palestine,” Bilek said in a statement. “DCI-P is not, as alleged, a terrorist organization.
