The human bone fragments recovered from the oil storage facility fire scene are believed to be from 14 firefighters.

Cuban experts said this week they haven’t been able to identify the remains of 14 victims believed to be firefighters who died combating theIn a news conference Wednesday evening, Dr. Jorge González Pérez, the head of Cuba’s Association of Forensic Medicine, said several search teams retrieved 754 human bone fragments in 14 different sets from the site, in an area close to the second oil storage tank that caught fire.

People watch a plume of smoke rise from the Matanzas supertanker base where a deadly fire started during a thunderstorm the night before in Matanzas, Cuba, Sunday, Aug. 7, 2022. Firefighters work to put out a deadly fire at a large oil storage facility in Matanzas, Cuba, Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2022. Scientists usually use fingerprints, teeth and DNA to identify bodies. But when bones are severely burned, DNA might be too degraded to help with identification.

Cuban government investigators determined that 30 people were standing close to the second tank at the moment of “the incident,” according to González Pérez’s account. He mentioned that investigators reviewed video footage taken by state journalists and videos from the Ministry of Interior and the Revolutionary Armed Forces.
