When she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on July 18, 1967, Gayle Mueller took a strict vow of secrecy.
“I had basic training in Cornwallis, N.S. Then I went to Ontario to learn communications, which included computers, radio, phone, teletype, and crypto machines. I learned all the ins and outs of putting things into code and breaking codes,” says Mueller, now living in Summerside, P.E.I.“I had a wonderful and interesting career. I enjoyed it every second. I got to encrypt and decrypt messages from all over the world from prime ministers and kings and their deputies and all that,” she says.
But a year-and-a-half later, that policy for women changed, and maternity leave became a possibility for women. I will be forever grateful,” says Mueller. - ContributedIn July 2023, Meuller and 30 other members of the Summerside Royal Canadian Legion visited Vimy in France and Belgium’s monuments, cemeteries, and battlefields.
According to the Government of Canada, the Menin Gate Memorial occurs every evening at 8 p.m. All traffic through the gateway in either direction is halted, and two buglers – on special occasions, there are four – sound the Last Post.
