Supporters of Sen. Doug Mastriano converged on Cumberland County’s West Shore Saturday for the debut screening of a film celebrating the post-Trump grassroots conservatism in Pennsylvania and what it’s trying to accomplish.
Though the premiere of “The Return of the American Patriot” was moved twice in the run-up to Saturday’s screening, the film’s producer, Stephen Turley, claimed to have sold 1,200 tickets for the event.At least some of the media members in attendance were barred from covering the event, but on the church campus, attendees who had purchased tickets starting at $20 passed through a security screening and were asked to show identification before being waived in.
In the queue, meanwhile, ticket-holders complained about Democrats and compared their conservative chops. One couple from York County was circulating petitions to try to get a referendum on the fall ballot asking voters if they would like the county to replace its Dominion Systems voting machines. The mood was lightened by a mobile Mastriano billboard driven into the site by LaVerne Brown, a Dauphin County committeeman, featuring two cutout characters that once graced his Country Cousins restaurant in Tower City.The kids, Rexford and Ellie, shared the stage with a stork holding a bundle labeled “the unborn” — a nod to Mastriano’s staunch anti-abortion stance.
