On a recent video conference with 12 colleagues, I found I was the only person not living with family, a roommate, or a partner. But I am not alone. Though I considered returning home to Los Angeles, I decided to stay in New York because I have two rescue cats in Brooklyn who need me, and frankly, I need them too.

Whether we like it or not, isolation is both a time of anxiety and introspection. Solitude has naturally led to reflection, and I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the “cat lady” stigma and how it differs from my experience as a cat owner, which, I discovered, has been greatly informed by the feline-loving editor Grace Coddington.and was delighted when she included cats as supporting talent.

I checked in with Grace, who recently got two new kittens, to see how she was faring. “I think the cats have kind of saved me from going crazy,” she said. “The whole world is in crisis, but the cats don’t know that; they just make you realize that things will return to normal.” What “normal” will look like when we finally emerge from isolation remains a question mark; but in my realm, the presence of Dinah and Nelson is a comforting constant. Together, we three Angelinos are New York Tough.
