My Thanksgiving was a mishmash of languages and traditions and foods and drinks.
Golumpkis and Kvas and Nylisnikis and Kanapkis from Ukraine, Ale from Ireland, CamotesEnmielados from Mexico, and turkey with cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes with gravy and stuffing from the United States.
Dessert was my mom’s delicious homemade pecan pie cheesecake, and the pumpkin pie we had made together. But dessert was also macaroons from France and Tvorog Zapekanka from Ukraine, homemade by Alina Lebich. It was definitely far different from your typical American Thanksgiving, and many people might possibly think my family and I are crazy, but it was unique. And in that, it was a gift. It was exhausting, having so many people in the house for so long, but it was so much fun, I wouldn’t trade it for any other “typical” Thanksgiving, where people crowd around the tv and watch football and don’t talk to each other.
For at our Thanksgiving table, there was talk and laughter and sharing experiences, and most importantly, creating memories for years to come. As we approach the Christmas holidays, consider welcoming those who may be new to our country, from different lands and cultures. They could experience a profound blessing, and so could you.If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
