Crash sparks quarter-acre brush fire near Westfield Plaza Bonita mall [Breaking]
A crash sparked a quarter-acre brush fire along a National City road Monday morning, officials said.
The crash occurred about 9:40 a.m. when a driver veered off Plaza Bonita Road near Westfield Plaza Bonita mall and ended up in heavy brush along the road. The spot is located just east of Interstate 805 and south of state Route 54. The car caught fire, and the blaze spread to surrounding vegetation, said Chula Vista fire Capt. Josh Sanders.The driver was not injured, National City Battalion Chief Brian Krepps told OnScene TV.
Firefighters from National City, Chula Vista and Bonita attacked the fire as a helicopter made water drops. The spot, known as “the Jungle,” attracts homeless encampments, but firefighters didn’t encounter any homeless individuals while they extinguished the fire, Krepps said.
