Several railroad crossings near 80 S. Navajo Street in Salt Lake City were closed for almost 2 hours this morning after a semitruck and freight train collided.
Salt Lake police officers responded to the scene just before 9 a.m. and quickly found that nobody had been hurt, Sgt. Mark Wian said.
After speaking with the truck driver, officers determined the truck had crossed the tracks, then backed up to allow another vehicle to exit a parking lot the driver was trying to enter without realizing a train was coming. The train, which was moving slowly, struck the trailer being pulled by the truck. The railroad crossing only had a stop sign, Wian said.
Multiple railroad crossings in the area were blocked by the stopped train, but were reopened by 10:30 a.m. with the help of Union Pacific.
