August's CPI report illustrates prices rising 0.6% month-over-month alongside inflation gains of 3.7% year-over-year. Rising gas prices and energy costs have been cited as key drivers in inflation bearing down on consumers. KPMG Senior Economist Yelena Maleyev and Sahm Consulting Founder Claudia Sahm — who is also a former Federal Reserve Board economist — join Yahoo Finance Live to break down August's data and analyze what is behind the trends in energy prices. 'This should be a reminder to all of us that the Fed is not in charge of inflation. These are geopolitical events that are driving energy prices and this is a good reminder that today, it is not all about the Fed in terms of policy responses,' Sahm states. Maleyev referred to peaks in energy prices in June 2022 as the 'lowest-hanging fruit' for inflation relief that has already been picked: 'We have been seeing an overall deceleration, just a few months of increased gas or energy prices does not a trend yet make.'
