The Dallas Cowboys are already having a rough offseason – and things may have just gotten much worse.
It’s yet another blow for Dallas, which has sneakily lost a lot of talent in the offseason – especially on offense. The teamOne of their other star receivers, Michael Gallup, is still recovering from a torn ACL suffered late in the 2021 season. And James Washington, whom Dallas signed as a free agent from Pittsburgh, fractured his foot during training camp and will miss 6-10 weeks.
On the offensive line, Dallas watched starters La’El Collins and Connor Williams leave for the Bengals and Dolphins, respectively. Now, Smith – long an anchor of this line – is going to miss significant time, giving Dak Prescott another new starter to work with. Zack Martin will continue to anchor the right guard position, where he has been a first-team All-Pro five times, and Tyler Biadasz will return for his second season as the starting center. Terence Steele, an undrafted free agent in 2021, will likely start at right tackle again, too.Getty Images
But on the left side, it’s a huge question mark. Smith was supposed to anchor the left tackle position, but without him, does the team move rookie Tyler Smith to left tackle, where he played in college? Or do they stick to the plan and keep him at left guard, where he wasn’t even guaranteed to start? Earlier this week, head coach Mike McCarthy said that Connor McGovern would be the starter.
Now, with two weeks left to go before the season starts, McCarthy will have to make some tough decisions – and fast.
