Covid press conference scientists would not have agreed works drinks were allowed

on Wednesday as part of his defence against charges that he wilfully or recklessly misled parliament over Partygate.

Asked by senior Conservative MP Sir Bernard Jenkin what he would have told firms about such events, Mr Johnson said he would have responded that it was “up to organisations, as the guidance says, to decide how they are going to implement the guidance amongst them”. He said: “Where they can’t do social distancing perfectly, they can’t maintain two metres or one metre, they are entitled to have mitigations. And we did indeed have plenty of mitigations.

Chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty; chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance; Dame Jenny Harries, the chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency; former deputy chief medical officer Professor Jonathan Van-Tam and the UKHSA’s chief medical adviser Professor Susan Hopkins did not respond to a request for comment.

A source close to Sir Patrick said the role of the government’s chief scientific adviser was to provide scientific advice, alongside Sage, not to make decisions or set policy.
