Most of Saskatchewan's COVID-19 numbers are heading the right way after weeks of sky-high hospitalizations.

However, the province is still struggling to improve a stagnant vaccination rate its top doctor says is the result of apathy and misinformation.

In emergency rooms, fewer patients presented with symptoms of the virus. Data from nine former health regions said the rate of patients with illness resembling COVID-19 fell to 16.5 patients for every 1,000 visits in the week of May 21, well below the average recorded over the past six weeks. “All the indicators are pointing in the right direction,” chief medical health officer Dr. Saqib Shahab said inOnly 11,494 doses were administered between May 15 and May 21. The vast majority were “second booster” shots to people who had already received three doses of an approved vaccine. And only 255 doses were administered to children, who have by far the lowest vaccination rate out of any age group in the province.
