Arcturus has been associated with pink eye, or conjunctivitis, making it hard to tell if the symptoms are a sign of COVID or just seasonal allergies. Find out more.
Researchers say Arcturus is more transmissible, with some predicting this new subvariant will become the dominant strain by the summer.
“When you get a new variant that’s a relative of the variant that was dominant, if it makes you sick, chances are it will not make you terribly sick unless you are very immunocompromised,” he said.Article content The B.C. Centre for Disease Control said conjunctivitis has been reported in a proportion of COVID-19 cases in the past, but whether the itchy eyes and redness show up more in Arcturus cases remains to be seen. It is also spring and allergy season, said the agency, so the cases of pink eye could be due to other causes.
“It is therefore with great hope that I declare COVID-19 over as a global health emergency,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He added, however, that the end of the emergency did not mean COVID was over as a global health threat. They attribute the “high level of population immunity” to vaccination and the combination of boosters and infection.
