County judges were given emergency authority during the pandemic. Some Fort Bend commissioners want it back.
Fort Bend County Commissioner's Court, from left, Vincent Morales, Grady Prestage, KP George, Andy Meyers and Ken DeMerchantFort Bend County commissioners this week unanimously amended a proposal that would have allowed County Judge KP George sole control over a $300,000 contract, a move that some county officials say signals a return to pre-pandemic procedure where the entire panel decides certain issues deemed urgent.within their local jurisdictions.
George initially tried to put the motion to a vote while Meyers was still asking questions about the contract, but Meyers persisted. “It may be prudent that once we get this negotiated, it comes back to the court first and not have just authorized to sign it,” Precinct 2 Commissioner Grady Prestage said during the meeting. “I want to just scratch the part of the motion that says ‘authorizes him to sign all binding documents’ and in place of that, put ‘present to commission's court for final approval.
