The most famous example of a pedestrian scramble is Tokyo\u0027s Shibuya crossing, where roughly 2,500 people scramble across the intersection per crossing.
Crowds criss-cross Shibuya Crossing, one of the busiest intersections in the world, in Tokyo.“It’s not a new idea, but it would be new in Vancouver,” said Meiszner, adding a pedestrian scramble will also make the roads safer.
In 2013, Vancouver put off plans to install a pedestrian scramble on Robson Street due in part to concerns that the multi-directional crossings pose a hazard for the visually impaired. According to Meiszner and Zhou’s motion, there is strong public interest in a pedestrian scramble in Vancouver. The motion directs staff to propose possible sites for a scramble and to assess the effectiveness of such an initiative in Vancouver.
