As of December 2023, 40,000 meals a day are served at the 275 Kids Eat Smart programs across N.L. Canada remains the only G7 country, without a funded national school food program. By Andrewlwaterman
According to PROOF, whose report was based on data from 54,000 households taken from Statistics Canada’s Canadian Income Survey, 17.9 per cent of households in N.L. experienced one of the three levels of food insecurity, two per cent above the national average.4.9 per cent were marginally insecure Principals and teachers tell Stoyles that when a breakfast club is in the school, kids are more attentive, there is less disruption, attendance is up and the academic average goes up.
“Food insecurity in childhood is associated with all sorts of negative long-term outcomes,” Stoyles said. “We want to be part of the solution.”Kids Eat Smart works with the school administration and staff to set up clubs. Along with volunteers from the community, school volunteers order, pick up, drop off, prepare, and serve food, as well as clean up afterward. It’s a universal program, Stoyles said.
“That means breakfast is available at the schools and any child or youth who comes to school hungry has access to food at no cost,” Stoyles said.
