Breaking news: Nations poised to agree on historic climate fund for countries vulnerable to rising seas, deadly heat waves and other impacts
The European Union and a coalition of more than 100 developing countries came to a tentative agreement at the United Nations’ Climate Conference on Saturday, with outlines of a fund to help disaster-stricken nations deal with the consequences of climate change — a development that could pave the way to a successful end to weeks of negotiations after the conference had gone into overtime.
Nations at the COP27 climate conference in Egypt must still negotiate other aspects of the conference’s final decision, which will also determine how ambitious countries have to be in their efforts to curb planet-warming emissions. Diplomats warn that the details of those carbon-cutting measures are still undecided, and an impasse over one part of the text could doom the whole package. But many here are already celebrating the potential agreement — the first in the 30-year history of U.N.
