Connie Britton couldn’t be less interested in finding a “comfort zone.”
Britton stars as Nicole, a powerful career woman whose family life is on the brink of disaster. The character could have easily come off as a cliché of white privilege, but Britton imbues multiple layers and dimensions in her that make her much more than the sum of her parts. When she was first reading the scripts for the character, however, Britton was concerned she wouldn’t be able to understand Nicole. “It was kind of like, ‘I don’t know how to do this. She seems very different from me.
Filming in a bubble in Hawaii at the height of the pandemic, Britton describes it as an “idyllic situation” during a fearful time, particularly since she could bring her son, with her. “I still kind of felt the juggle that I feel all the time as a single mom trying to work with a kid that I want to spend as much time with as humanly possible.
Britton says she and White talked a lot about making sure that Nicole’s story line was not simply reactive to the actions of other characters around her, which include her antisocial son and rebellious daughter. “I feel like women are so often in reaction to the world around them, particularly women in a family structure. We’re just sort of meant to respond and nurture and take care of,” she says.
