James Grimsley, 55, was arrested Friday on suspicion of strangling 28-year-old Terrie Ladwig to death in December of 1994

CONCORD — Nearly 30 years after a Concord transgender woman was found beaten and strangled to death in her and her husband’s Concord apartment, police have arrested a Utah resident on a murder charge.

Police say they’re still investigating the motive. Grimsley is being extradited to Contra Costa County this week, authorities said. The criminal complaint against Grimsley includes a lone charge of murder with no enhancements. Police said at the time she was strangled with an extension chord and beaten.

The tragedy didn’t end there for Ladwig’s husband. After the homicide, the U.S. Navy gave him an “other than honorable” discharge after disciplinary proceedings that began just two weeks after their marriage was made public by her killing, the San Francisco Examiner reported at the time.
