With the age of online shopping, and e-commerce, people aren’t spending as much time going out to shop anymore. Even if the population does have spending power, they may not want to spend it, or have to be spending it other places, like rent, utilities, and groceries.SaltWire reached out to Crombie REIT, which owns the mall, to see what is being done on their end to help bring more businesses into the mall, and what may be causing stores to close specifically in Highland Square Mall.
"My opinion is that they should give people a break on the rent and spend the money to draw people and draw more stores in," he said.Highland Square Mall was once known as the one of the most elaborate malls in eastern Canada. With a total capacity of around 44 outlets, 20 of those now sit empty. “My mother gave it to me recently, and I said what am I going to do with this, I have no use for it,” Beck chuckled.
