Bogey\u002Dfree rounds gave Sam Choi and Corey Shaun a share of the first\u002Dround lead at the Commissionaires Ottawa Open at Eagle Creek Thursday.
Maybe the biggest birdie for Choi came on the par-4 12th hole, which played as the Dunrobin golf course’s toughest of the day. Choi sunk a 12-foot putt as he finished at seven-under 64.“I told my dad earlier today that I thought making par there would gain maybe a half a shot,” Choi said of the challenging, 512-yard hole. “So, making birdie there was big.”
In his short time playing on PGA TOUR Canada — this is his fifth tournament — Choi has made a habit of rolling in birdies as he looks for his fifth consecutive top-10 finish and to improve on his No. 5 standing in the Fortinet Cup chase. In his previous four starts, the Pepperdine product’s worst performance was his tie for sixth last week in Quebec. He has made 90 birdies this season, most by any player.
A new year has brought new optimism for Shaun; his solid play Thursday was indicative of that mindset. He rolled in a 25-footer for birdie on 16, then finished with a 30-foot putt for birdie on 18.
