It wasn’t until ’63 when he dropped by our house in San Antonio during Christmas vacation. He stopped by to visit my father and then my grandmother, where I lived. Nieves had married Sara, the girl who made the Aztec comment. He grinned and raised his eyebrows as if caught off guard. He cleared his throat and smiled, saying, “You ask hard questions, Juliáncito. But you can find out for yourself if you and your sister want to go with us to Michigan and return after the Christmas break.”
Señor Navidad Nieves was one of those rare humans who changed a part of my life, encouraged my creative curiosity and shared the joys of a white Christmas with my sister and me.
