Extreme heat and cold require bold new solutions to maintain grid reliability.
Spiking energy prices, power plant failures and the threat of rolling blackouts have plagued much of the U.S. this past summer. Power outages also happen in Texas in winter, as was the case last year.
Flexibility is derived from what the industry calls “distributed energy resources” or DERs: rooftop solar and backup generators, residential battery systems, electric vehicle, or EV, chargers and the like. The Texas fleet of peakers is approximately 30 gigawatts, or GW. According to Guidehouse Insights, a global consulting firm, DERs forecasted to come online in Texas between 2020 and 2030 total more than 32 GW. These numbers show that the Texas peaker fleet could be displaced by diverse DERs in less than a decade if intelligently aggregated into a “virtual power plant,” or VPP.
