As many Cape Breton Post readers will be aware, Nova Copper, a mining company, is interested in purchasing “surplus” Cape Breton Regional Municipality ...

which would undoubtedly create negative impacts for this beautiful and critical natural environment.

Obviously, we are very alarmed and deeply concerned about the prospect of a mine on or near the mountain.Surely there can be no question that more economic growth in our area is desirable, but at what cost?Firstly, the centerpiece of our community development is our beautiful, much appreciated and well-utilized trail system on Coxheath Mountain.

There is the overriding concern related to the potential negative impact on the water supply of area residents, as well as damage to the aquatic life in Gillis Lake, Blackett’s Lake and the numerous brooks and streams which flow down from the Coxheath Hills. Please understand that we are not opposed to economic development. Indeed we are involved in economic development. We are, however, opposed to the destruction of a pristine natural environment in what also happens to be a beautiful residential area.
