Nova Scotia's Missing Persons Act helps families find loved ones with mental illnesses who have lost contact and may be living on the streets. - UnsplashMarlene Bryenton, a children’s author and health advocate who lives in Charlottetown, P.E.I., provided the following opinion article.

To our disappointment, our son has been picked up by various police departments and let go. It seems the Human Rights Act prevents our son from a psychiatric assessment at a hospital. In these cases, a record-access order may be made containing contact or identification information, telephone and other communication records. This could include inbound and outbound text messages, internet browsing history, GPS tracking, closed-circuit television footage, travel and accommodation and financial information records.

Our son would have benefitted from the Community Treatment Order, as he qualified. Perhaps this order would have helped our son become stable with proper medication and hospitalization. Our son told us that he goes to mall food courts for warmth. Sadly, his financial resources will be depleted very soon, and he will have no food or shelter. We believe our son will not use soup kitchens or shelters due to paranoia. Our best efforts to locate our son and bring him home have failed.
