Washington Commanders safeties Darrick Forrest (shoulder) and Jeremy Reaves (knee) were placed on injured reserve Monday after they got hurt days earlier in the team's 40-20 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Washington Commanders safety Darrick Forrest can’t keep Cleveland Browns wideout Amari Cooper from scoring his second touchdown of the game at FedEx Field, Landover, MD, January 1, 2023. Washington Commanders safeties Darrick Forrest and Jeremy Reaves were placed on injured reserve Monday after they got hurt days earlier in the team’s 40-20 loss to the Chicago Bears.

The injuries are significant in that Forrest and Reaves were both important contributors to Washington’s defense and special teams. Forrest had played all but five defensive snaps dating back to Week 10 of last season, while Reaves was named an All-Pro in 2022 for his special teams impact. Coach Ron Rivera declined to dive into specifics for each injury. Forrest reportedly suffered a fractured shoulder. Reaves wrote on X that he expected to be back this season. Rivera said he was hopeful that Forrest would only miss four games, but added more tests were needed. The Commanders plan to sign practice squad safety Terrell Burgess to the active roster in the wake of the injuries to Forrest and Reaves, the Washington Post reported.

Rivera said that second-year safety Percy Butler and rookie safety Quan Martin are in line for bigger roles because of the injuries. Butler has started three games this season, often appearing on the field in Washington’s three-safety packages. Martin, a second-round pick in April out of Illinois, has yet to take a defensive snap this season.
