Trade piece from Miami swinging a scorching bat as season launches

There was a moment in the Padres’ game against the Diamondbacks on Friday when an entire dugout reshaped its perceptions of backup catcher Jorge Alfaro.Alfaro, who sliced a single to right in his previous at-bat, yanked a ball to left in the seventh inning off reliever Sean Poppen. As he made the turn to second, Alfaro shifted to an entirely different gear.

As the eyes of teammates widened, Alfaro was already a quarter of the way to another base before slamming on significant brakes to slow his significant momentum.“It was unbelievable,” Padres pitcher Blake Snell said. “Everybody in the dugout was like, ‘What the heck?’ He’s trying to get to third. He was moving. He looked like a fullback or something. I was impressed. I didn’t know he was that fast and explosive.“Oh my gosh,” said fellow catcher Austin Nola, shaking his head.

“It’s how life works,” he said. “Maybe they didn’t need anything from me there . They gave me the chance and things didn’t work the way we wanted. It feels good to have people believe in you.” “I’m a big guy who likes to eat a lot,” Alfaro reasoned. “I have to stay in good shape, so I try to make good choices, eat a lot of vegetables.”The twist: This one had fur on the legs and feet.Melvin prefers the real-life version, particularly at the plate.
