Jim Poling, a one-time Sault Star reporter and general manager at Canadian Press, wrote a coffee table book entitled The Canoe: An Illustrated History. He has also written a biography of artist Tom Thomson, whose body was found near his overturned canoe

When Grade 8 classmate Nancy Hogarth wrote that in my autograph book, little did either of us know that she was giving me a blueprint for my adult life.

The festival honours the late Bill Mason, renowned filmmaker, naturalist, author, artist and conservationist. He has been called the patron saint of canoeing, having produced 18 National Film Board features that showcased his respect for nature. The time was early July 1967 and a boatload of “voyageurs” was scheduled to arrive in the Sault on a cross-country trek commemorating Canada’s Centennial.

In the crowd of well-wishers was Harold Tolley, a First World War vet and the long-time city clerk of Sault Ste. Marie. I sheepishly changed places with Harold and we carried on through the Sault Locks and out into the St. Marys River in front of Bellevue Park to rendezvous with the voyageurs. Then I went home to nurse my aching limbs after that half-a-dozen-strokes ordeal.
