One donor even wrote a check for $1,000 which has been turned into gift cards for the new mom.
A Facebook post from Aurora Ald. Patty Smith, 8th Ward, about a homeless woman about to give birth resulted in an outpouring of baby items that Smith collected in her far East Side Aurora family room and delivered to the young mother last week.
The initial two-sentence request for baby supplies had come from Hesed House, which sent out a message to its network of supporters that included one of Smith’s staff members.“It broke my heart,” said Smith of this young mom, who along with her 5-year-old is currently bunking in “very close quarters” with another family.
All week long, Smith told me, she was overwhelmed by phone calls and texts from constituents wanting to help. And all week long she was inundated with baby items, from diapers to clothes to toys to books to blankets and linens, not to mention all the big items – Hesed House supplied the crib – such as a car seat, stroller, swing, changing table and play pad.
But that’s not the focus for now. As Smith pointed out, this mother is giving birth not just with a good supply of diapers and clothes, but with a whole lot of community support that, at the very least, will give a newborn the start in life every child deserves. Rene Koehler, you may recall from previous columns, flew to Ukraine last March as part of an international crisis response team with more than two dozen large duffle bags stuffed with life-saving supplies donated by people in the Fox Valley.Unfortunately, Koehler learned just a few months after getting back from Ukraine, where she also worked in a refugee center, that she has pancreatic cancer.
