Jackson leans back in her seat to absorb the emotional moment. Dramatic music amplifies the scene. Her gaze becomes teary. The mural was razed by the city in late 2020. When that happened, Felix Maldonado Jr. felt the loss deeply, like a death in the family. Media outlets asked how he felt. He replied through a prepared statement: “Ask the people of Gary, not me.” “I reflected on how awesome that mural was and how it impacted people,” Maldonado told me Sunday. “To see it now gone, I finally felt sad about it.”
