Columbus City Schools' safety department, which does not carry weapons, has 171 safety specialist positions.

Columbus City Schools Safety and Security staff formed a new union through the Ohio Association of Public School Employees Association.171 safety specialist positions, including 139 paid for from the general fundOne hundred of the 171 safety and security staff are part of the union, said Columbus City Schools spokesperson Jacqueline Bryant. Another 30 employees will be eligible after their probationary period, Bryant said.

Pay rates for the 2021-22 school year for OAPSE safety and security staff ranged from $21.63 to $37, according to the contract. The bargaining unit members will receive a 4% pay increase effective Aug. 5, 2023, bringing the pay ranges for OAPSE safety and security to $24.79 to $40.82, according to the contract.Columbus City Schools had 172 fights and other major incidents in first month of school

“We are excited to enter the first contract and looking forward to working together to keep our children safe and secure,” said board member Carol Beckerle.
