"The root of violence is not the violent act itself," said Maria Stokes, Assistant Director of End the Violence, a Columbus-based organization. "It is all of the things leading up to it, which, most of the time, it has to do with trauma." The leaders of End the Violence said it's important to meet people where they're at to stop shootings.

Also on Monday night, members of Columbus City Council voted to financially support the Office of Violence Prevention's work with the National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform, Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio's CHOICES for Victims of Domestic Violence program, and The Ohio State University. Specifically, with OSU, they backed a not-for-profit contract to identify evidence-based practices to address violence prevention strategies.
