Several calls for the odor of gas in Lorain County prompted Columbia Gas to release the following statement about the smell.
LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio - Multiple calls for the odor of gas in several Northeast Ohio counties including Lorain, Cuyahoga, Richland, and Ashland Counties Wednesday prompted Columbia Gas to release the following statement about the smell.The situation is safe, and the source of the odor is known. The odor is occurring due to an overabundance of an additive known as mercaptan having been added by an upstream supplier. Mercaptan is a harmless substance that makes it easier to detect natural gas.
Although we have identified this odor source, it is important to contact us at 1-800-344-4077 if you believe you are smelling a gas leak. For more information, go toNorth Ridgeville Fire Chief released the following information and tips on how to alleviate some of the smell. All natural gas calls are being handled by the fire department as an emergency, but calls are backed up. For minor odors, open windows on opposite sides of the home. For major odors, open windows and leave the home or business. Be patient, the FD will be there. Fire Chief John Reese
