Colorado Probe of Aurora Police Department Finds Racial Bias

The Aurora police department used force against and arrested people of color, particularly Black people, at disproportionately higher rates than white people, according to the findings of a yearlong investigation by the Colorado attorney general’s office

The office’s 118-page report, released Wednesday, said racial disparities persisted across the way police in the Denver suburb interact with Black people in “nearly every important type of police contact with the communityThe attorney general’s office also found the department used excessive force in circumstances that were unlawful and unconstitutional.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser has asked the city of Aurora, which oversees the police and fire departments, to help establish an agreement with the office, known as a consent decree, to work to address the issues raised in the report. “These actions are unacceptable,” Mr. Weiser said at a press conference Wednesday. “They hurt the people that law enforcement is entrusted to protect, and they destroy community trust.”

Aurora City Manager Jim Twombly said the city would work with the office to make necessary changes. Police Chief Vanessa Wilson said that the department would continue to work with the attorney general’s office and that the consent decree “will serve as another resource in our path forward.” The department has been instituting changes to improve policing, de-escalation protocols and community outreach, Chief Wilson said.
