Demand for talent is driving college graduate starting salaries higher but they may fall far short of expectations.
Undergraduate students across all majors and institutions overestimated their starting salaries by 88%,Ten years into their careers, students anticipate making more than $200,000, well over the average mid-career salary ofIn fact, salary projections for the Class of 2022 vary greatly depending on the area of concentration.
Employers projected starting salaries would increase 5.4% for math and sciences majors and decrease 14.8% for humanities majors, NACE found. Overall, computer sciences majors are likely to be the highest paid just out of college, earning $75,900, on average, followed by engineering graduates. "Students really want to understand the hiring demand and starting salaries within their major because they differ," said Mary Gatta, NACE's director of research and public policy.
