USD left-hander Brycen Mautz has displayed power and command this season for the Toreros. This weekend at Grand Canyon he did one other thing — he kept the ball in the ballpark.
Most impressive was how Mautz dialed it in after last week’s start against Dallas Baptist, which featured 15 strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. That was the upside. The downside — Mautz gave up six home runs that accounted for eight runs in an 8-6 loss.“Good job by him, pounding strikes and not giving in,” USD head coach Brock Ungricht said in a postgame press conference after the Dallas Baptist game. “Obviously, the long ball hurt us. ...
