Cole Zelwin, a fifth-grader at Orchard Middle School in Solon, died early Wednesday at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital of complications from leukemia. He was 11.
PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – It wasn’t supposed to be like this, Rabbi Hal Rudin-Luria told a standing-room crowd of about 1,000 people that packed the sanctuary at B’nai Jeshurun Congregation.
“That was going to be followed by an epic party to celebrate ‘Cole-chella,’ where he was going to open the party on stage with his guitar.” “Cole loved to talk, and he could talk to anybody,” he said. “Cole had the gift of gab. He was wise beyond his years. He was an adult trapped in an 11-year-old body.
“Cole loved it so much, he started taking vocal lessons and was the lead singer on many songs in his upcoming concert,” he said. “There is nothing cooler than watching your 10-year-old son play Nirvana in front of your parents while they wonder what they have gotten themselves into.” “But there was one person who sat above them all for Cole – his mother,” he continued. “Cole was a mama’s boy and proud of it. Their relationship was one of a kind.
Zelwin closed by saying the best way to honor Cole is “to never let his memory die and to share your memories about him.” Cole’s family members shared many stories with Rudin-Luria of what made him so special and how he lived for others, he said. “He actually secured his first customer after making a successful sales call,” he said. “He was a man with a plan.
“When I would call him up to lead prayer, sometimes Cole would look at me incredulously. ‘Really? Again?’ Yet without fail, he would lead us in prayer impeccably.” “I’m always going to miss Cole’s hilarious impressions, voices and most of all, the way he thought of other people’s feelings. He was truly the most compassionate person I’ve ever met.”
