Advertisement 3Now, late in life, Kennedy has entered politics. At 69, he is running for president. His campaign is an insurgency, outside the mainstream, a stinging indictment of today’s America.
To Kennedy, it was about a respect for the Earth. He spoke about our obligation to the planet as tenants, not landlords. It is a legacy, he said, in a small, quivering voice, that we borrow from our children more than we inherit from our parents. Kennedy’s work with two organizations, Riverkeeper and Waterkeeper, was legendary. He led the movement to save the Hudson River, which had become toxic. He launched lawsuits that won more than $4 billion U.S. in settlements and damages from polluters. It had all begun in 1984 in the Hudson River Fisherman’s Association, his office the back of a pickup truck.Article content
