The puck first dropped on the Yarmouth Mariners during the 2002-2003 season
Despite only being three years into their franchise, the Yarmouth Mariners were selected to host the Fred Page Cup in 2005.Down by two goals as time ticked away, the Mariners pulled their goalie. Meteghan’s Jason Robichaud scored in the final minute and 31 seconds to electrify the crowd. When the final buzzer sounded the team fell short, losing to the Hawkesbury Hawks 4-3.Yarmouth Mariners Jason Robichaud was comforted after the Mariners loss in the 2005 championship game of the Fred Page Cup.
That’s how it felt during the 2016-2017 season as the Mariners jumped out to a great start of their season. His first year back as head coach of the team after being gone a couple of years, it was an especially great way for Mariners head coach Laurie Barron to pick up where things had left off, he says.
During the 2017-2018 season, the Yarmouth Mariners won the Eastlink South Division Championship title in Game 5 of their playoff series, which punched their ticket to another crack at a league championship. Said coach Laurie Barron at the time: “After the sting goes away, we’ll look back and say it was a hell of a year. We’re back on the map now. We’ll go on from there. We’re going to get another chance to win that last game of the season.”

TINA COMEAU PHOTO The team has also had many local players from Yarmouth, Shelburne and Digby counties on its teams throughout the past two decades, which again gives players in minor hockey the hope, and the goal, that one day they can be a Jr. A Mariner too. It’s by no means a stretch to say that the popularity of the Yarmouth Jr. A Mariners, and Yarmouth’s reputation as a hockey town, helped give Yarmouth the on-ice advantage when it came to being selected to host the World Junior A Challenge in November 2012.

TINA COMEAU PHOTOTeams included Canada East, Canada West, Russia, Switzerland, United States and Czech Republic. Also included were Canadian Junior Hockey League prospect games. One of the most popular World Jr. A Challenge players in 2013 was Morgan Messenger of Barrington, and a member of the Yarmouth Jr. A Mariners. He played on Canada East.
Mariners head coach and general manager Laurie Barron says he and the team have been very appreciative of the team’s ownerships during the past two decades, and also for all of the coaching and team staff who have served on the bench over the past 20 seasons.Okay, we get it, you want to beat the parking lot congestion at the end of a Mariners game.
Or the time in January 2014 that the Mariners won in the shootout but then lost in that same shootout after much of the rink had emptied.Connor Donaghey had scored the winning goal. Or so everyone thought. The Mariners fans were celebrating their team’s 5-4 shootout victory. The three stars of the game had been announced. And players from the Mariners and the Summerside Western Capitals had started to leave the ice.
When the shootout, now sudden-death, ended, Summerside had instead won the game and grabbed a much-needed Mariners’ game point as Summerside’s next shot went in but Yarmouth’s didn’t. The game result, however, was not overturned, even though the league president said, “Yarmouth was wronged, no question. There was no goal.”As for the people who had left the rink after the shootout – that is, the first shootout – they too were confused later that night and/or the following day, asking, “What do you mean the Mariners didn’t win?”
As young Mariners fan Caelen Wallace said afterward, “This is why you should never leave a Mariners game early!”There have been lots of Mariners players come and go. No matter where they come from, they are all united in talking about how much they’ve loved playing hockey in Yarmouth. The team also gives back to the community in more ways than just playing hockey.
Said Noah McMullin about his 2016-2019 Mariners experience: “It’s a great atmosphere, it just doesn’t get much better than this.” It’s always exciting for fans to watch Mariners players chase team and player records. Our top pick happened in the 2019-2020 season when Matthew Barron broke three 14-year-old franchise records.

Her father Laurie Barron is proud of the way the team shows its support to people in the community with special needs both at the rink and through its Icy Knights program, which is one of Barron’s coach’s picks when it comes to Mariners' memories and moments.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to that, including the players, the coaches, the sound booth folk, the 50/50 sellers, the Mariners Centre staff, the Mariners team staff, MC Media for all of its superb video work, the fans, and everyone else who has a hand in contributing to the great game vibe.Mariners: 20 seasons in Yarmouth.
