Prosecutors had called for life sentences for two leaders in a 2020 plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
Federal prosecutors said Fox, a 39-year-old Wyoming, Michigan, man, and Barry Croft, and Croft, 47, of Bear, Delaware, led the plot. Prosecutors called for life sentences for both men.U.S. District Judge Robert Jonker said 16 years in prison is a significant sentence and would deter others. He noted that Whitmer was not in danger throughout the alleged plotting because the undercover FBI agents and paid informants had infiltrated the group.
Prosecutors said that plans included a shootout with Whitmer’s security team, blowing up a nearby bridge to slow police response and putting Whitmer on trial. Fox repeatedly called Whitmer a “tyrant,” testimony showed.
