Thirty\u002Dnine of the 101 wildfires since 2015 where the B.C. Wildfire Service sought to recover costs were blamed on rail activities.
for Christopher O’Connor and Jordan Spinks, the two representative plaintiffs in the case, argued the blaze was ignited as a result of a coal train passing through the village.Article contentIn its report, the TSB noted that a loaded, 157-car coal train, owned by CP and operated by a CN crew, was the last train to pass through Lytton before the first report of a fire. It passed the area where the blaze is suspected to have started at about 4:30 p.m.
Both the TSB and Transport Canada inspected the CP train, looking for signs of “hot bearings, burnt brake heads, built-up tread and other potential fire-creating causes.” No anomalies were noted. Since then, however, Transport Canada has approved new railway fire mitigation rules, which came into effect last June, requiring railways to “address track integrity during periods of extreme heat, for inspection of the exhaust system and for a fire risk mitigation plan for the prevention of fires on railway rights-of-way.”Article content
In a statement, CP said the “vast majority” of wildfires are caused by nature when environmental conditions are extremely hot and dry. “While railroads are not a significant cause of wildfires,” CP has a “proactive” fire mitigation plan.show that most wildfires are caused by lightning, but 40 per cent of fires between 2008 and 2020 were caused by people.
Baron said fires aren’t an acceptable risk of running trains through the forest in summer: “There are things they should be able to do to mitigate fire risk.”
