A man was arrested Tuesday after a protester defaced a Tom Thompson painting at the National Gallery of Canada.
The climate-action group On2Ottawa said in a media release that one of its supporters entered the gallery and splattered the famous painting, Northern River, with pink paint to draw attention to the need for “urgent action on the climate and ecological crisis.”The painting, which was completed in 1915, was “unharmed,” the gallery said in a statement, because it was protected by a glazed panel. It was removed for “further evaluation” and is expected to be rehung soon.
Describing the incident as “unfortunate,” the gallery added that the safety and security of staff, visitors and the collection remain the highest priority. The institution is “collaborating” with the police investigation.Article content “Why do we protect paintings of landscapes, and not the land itself?” reads a statement attributed to a person named Kaleb Suedfeld Tuesday. “Canada must take action, we must establish a national firefighting service as the first step.”
