“According to our measurements, boreal fires in 2021 shattered previous records,” said senior study co-author Steven Davis, UCI professor of Earth system science. “These fires are two decades of rapid warming and extreme drought in northern Canada and Siberia coming to roost, and unfortunately even this new record may not stand for long.”

However, during B.C.’s worst wildfire seasons, it was much higher. For example, in 2018 it was more than 200 MtCO2e, and more than 165 MtCO2e in 2017, according to data provided by the Environment Ministry.
