A collection of top local writers have contributed to “Cleveland Noir,” an anthology of short stories that reflect the seedier side of Cleveland and its surrounding areas.
Several authors who contributed to the recently published book “Cleveland Noir” are speaking at an event at the Music Box Supper Club. It sold out, but a waiting list is available.CLEVELAND, Ohio – Through all of Cleveland’s history, accomplishments and foibles, there is a dark side, one whose shadows are home to unsavory, scheming characters, haunting truths and emotional scars.
Michael Ruhlman and Miesha Wilson Headen edited “Cleveland Noir” as well as contributed stories. The book’s other writers form a strong backbone with the likes of Paula McLain, Susan Petrone, Thirty Umrigar and others. She did, and the protagonist becomes embroiled in a mystery surrounding the death of Ray Chapman, the Cleveland ballplayer who died from being hit by a pitched ball in 1920.
“Most of what I write is literary fiction with a twist of magical realism, so it was really fun to write outside my regular genre,” said Petrone, who as a teenager wanted to be a playwright. She spent the better part of two years working behind the scenes at Dobama Theatre, a time that honed her dialogue-writing skills.
“It’s so intentional, right?” Wilson Headen said. “It should be deeply entrenched in whatever city anthology.”Most of the writers are not regular writers of the noir genre, she said.
