Cleveland mayor reverses diversion center policy, won’t require prosecutor’s permission to bring people for treatment

Bibb said in a statement that he removed the requirement to give those accused of non-violent, low-level offenses better access to the county’s $9.2 million Diversion Center.

City prosecutor Aqueelah Jordan pushed for the requirement under previous Mayor Frank Jackson’s administration. It was roundly criticized by county officials, mental health experts and diversion center officials. The diversion center is staffed with nurses, psychiatrists, doctors and specialists who provide treatment. Employees then devise a plan for the person to continue to receive treatment elsewhere.

“We hope this announcement indicates the Mayor will make utilizing the Diversion Center a Cleveland Police Department priority that is reflected in a major increase in its use of the Center going forward,” Lentz said in a statement.
