“The enormity of this moment will be with me for many years to come,” said Rev. Thompson, a Jamaican immigrant and the third person of African descent to serve as leader of the denomination.
The General Synod, the governing body of the church that is based in Cleveland, voted Monday to elect Thompson during its 34th annual gathering in Indianapolis with 626 delegates voting for her election, 43 against and seven abstaining. Thompson is also the first Black woman to lead the church.
Thompson holds a doctorate in ministry, with a dissertation in religious multiplicity among African Caribbean people, from Seattle University; a master’s of divinity from Union Theological Seminary; and a master’s of public administration from North Carolina Central University.
