Former governor general David Johnston said the classified information would have required a public inquiry behind closed doors.
The former governor general argued that any public inquiry into the issue would be expensive and take an extended period of time and most of it would have to be conducted behind closed doors because of the classified information involved.
Stanton said foreign interference is one of the easier intelligence issues to explore through a public inquiry. “My preference from a security perspective is the inquiry process because it has the means to manage that information,” he said. The House debated a motion from NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Tuesday that calls for the government to remove Johnston as special rapporteur and to call a public inquiry.
Both former intelligence bosses told the committee that Johnston’s report was right to criticize how intelligence flows through the federal government. Wilczynski said there is no reason the intelligence agencies can’t be more clear about what they do and open about their work.
